Information about 10408
This aircraft was originally constructed by Aérospatiale in Marignane, France, but was dismantled right after completion and shipped to Sweden. The company FFV Aerotech in Linköping assembled the helicopter according to the Air Force's specifications and completed the aircraft in March of 1991.
The helicopter type, which was designated HKP 10, served as an Air Force search and rescue aircraft and operated parallel to BO105s and Bell 204s, but outlived them both. This machine, number "98" (nickname "Margata") was operated mainly operated at the F16 Air Force Base in Uppsala.
ARMED FORCES HELICOPTER WING
1998 saw the structural birth of a new joint helicopter force - the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing. From 1 January 1999 the unit merged the helicopter operations from all the three military branches (Air Force, Army, and Navy) together. The new organisation had no impact on the HKP 10s other than providing them with a slightly wider range of tasks.
MODIFIED TO A “B” MODEL
H-98 was one of three Super Pumas that were modified into B models (HKP 10B) by HeliOne in Norway. The other ones were 10403 and 10406. The conversions were ordered in 2005 and they were carried out between 2007 and 2008. The helicopters were heavily delayed and had some initial quality problems upon the delivery. The purpose of the B model was to be able to participate in foreign peacekeeping operations in "Nordic Battle Group 08", but that participation was impossible due to the delayed delivery.
The B model is a sophisticated medevac platform with improved avionics and an enhanced nursing cabin. Some of its key combat features are IR suppressors, NVG, ballistic protection, robot detection- and self-protection system, engine particle separators and machine gun fittings.
The B models and their crews were prepared for a potential participation in a future International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan. The training was mainly conducted at the F21 Air Force Base in Luleå, where the B models had been accompanied by two “D” models (10402 and 10407) that are fully dedicated training helicopters. Additional training was performed in Africa and Spain.
AFGHANISTAN 2011
In January 2011 the Swedish international medical evacuation unit, SAE ISAF MEDEVAC, was ordered to Afghanistan. The helicopter unit consisted of two HKP 10B Super Pumas that were based at Camp Marmal in Mazar-e Sharif, northern Afghanistan. The helicopters arrived in the area on March 24, 2011, became operational on April 2 and made the unit’s first in-country mission on April 3. The first two helicopters used for the Afghanistan service were 10406 and 10408 (callsign "Silverfox").
The SAE ISAF MEDEVAC unit carried out 82 inter-hospital medical transports during its two years in service. SAE ISAF MEDEVAC was replaced by the Swedish unit SAE ISAF UH-60 in at the end of March 2013. The new unit consisted of a total of four HKP 16 Black Hawks (callsign "Icepac") and about forty people. The Black Hawks are expected to operate in Afghanistan for three years. They are specialized in tactical on-scene medical evacuations, which is an operational improvement from the Super Puma's earlier role as an inter-hospital medical transporter.
SAE ISAF MEDEVAC’s two HKP 10Bs were transported to the helicopter squadron in Luleå, where they will fulfill their last few years in service prior to their retirement.
RETIREMENT
The HKP 10 (A, B and D) is the next helicopter type destined for retirement in the Swedish Armed Forces. The future organization will consist of 18 HKP 14 (NH90), 20 HKP 15 (AW.109) and 15 HKP 16 (Black Hawk).
