NHV Group acquires Blueway

[Norway] NHV, a fast growing international helicopter operator, announces today that it has completed the acquisition of Blueway, making it one of the largest European helicopter transport operators.

In line with its growth strategy, and in order to provide even more efficient services to its clients, NHV, supported by its shareholder Ardian and its founder and CEO, Eric van Hal, has ordered 16 Airbus Helicopters EC175. With the delivery of the first two on December 11th, the first commercial flights have already been performed for oil and gas missions, making the NHV Group the first operator of this new generation of helicopters. These additions reaffirm NHV’s position as owning and operating one of the youngest, state-of-the-art and safest fleets in the industry. With the acquisition of Blueway, the NHV Group becomes the only operator with a presence in all Oil and Gas producing countries in the North Sea region, as well as a leading position in West Africa. The combined group now employs around 650 people across the globe, with a combined turnover of US$270 million.

Värmland-Dalarna selects EC 145 T2 for EMS

[Mora/Karlstad] The county councils in Värmland and Dalarna announce that they have signed a purchase agreement with Airbus Helicopters for two new EC 145 T2 helicopters. The agreement includes an option for eight more helicopters to the counties’ joint HEMS federation.

- This permanent solution improves patient safety and increase the ability to provide equitable health care for the citizens, says Lars-Olof Björkqvist, deputy county director at Dalarna County Council.

The member counties are responsible for providing helicopters to the joint local federation, currently named "Kommunalförbundet Ambulanshelikopter Värmland-Dalarna", whose mission is to manage the flight operations.

- The aircraft that we have signed an agreement for is larger and it can fly longer, which means that more advanced medical equipment can be provided outside of the hospitals and that the helicopter can perform long journeys without having to refuel, says Tobias Kjellberg, Health Officer at Värmland County Council.

In a recently published press release the councils says that the EC 145 T2 is quiet, safe and spacious, which provides excellent opportunities for a good long-term development of the operations. The larger cabin makes it easy for the medical staff to work with the patient. The new helicopters will be delivered in December 2015 according to the purchase agreement.

Final report from Jet Ranger accident near Ystad

[Ystad] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred in Rögla, northwest of Ystad, on 9 January 2014.

The aircraft, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger with the registration SE-JKP, was involved in a power line inspection task in southern Sweden when the accident occurred. The crew of two had just crossed an intersecting superimposed power line when they turned back in order to inspect a nearby pole. The downwind turn was conducted on the leeward side of a hill, where strong winds left little room to manoeuvre ahead of the recently crossed power line, why the helicopter lost height and collided with the ground at low speed.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) says that nothing indicates that any technical faults contributed to the incident. SHK concludes that the accident was caused by “the flight being carried out under meteorological conditions that impeded the possibility to execute the turn in the section of terrain in question, meaning the available power was less than that required to avoid collision with the ground”. The report contains no recommendations.

Military Super Pumas leaves Kallinge Air Force Base

[Ronneby] On 4 December the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing distinguished the retirement of the HKP 10 Super Puma from active service at the F17 Kallinge Air Force Base in southern Sweden. The helicopter type is now being replaced by the brand new HKP 14 (NH90), which made a tribute fly-by together with a HKP 10 at F17 to celebrate the event today.

The delivery of the HKP 10 began in 1988, when the F21 Air Force Base in Luleå got its first Super Pumas. F17 got its first Super Puma in the autumn of 1989. The helicopters replaced the aging HKP 4A (Boeing-Vertol 107) that had been used for regional search and rescue services since 1963.

The fleet of HKP 10s, which consisted of 12 aircraft at the most, has served at several locations throughout Sweden, but it is now being phased out in favour for new helicopters. The last remaining Swedish Super Pumas are currently operating from the F21 Air Force Base in Luleå.

In a total, the HKP 10 Super Puma made roughly 1000 rescue missions during the 25 years in service at the F17 Kallinge base. The private operator Norrlandsflyg inherited the civil SAR through the Swedish Maritime Administration in the spring of 2007, but the Super Pumas remained active in other roles until their official retirement at the 3rd Helicopter Squadron today.

The new naval HKP14s are gradually being supplied to the F17 base, where they will operate parallel to the smaller HKP15 (AgustaWestland 109 LUH). New hangars are currently being built in order to hold a large number of helicopters starting from 2017.

Laroy Flyg AB is looking for a new pilot

[Landskrona] Laroy Flyg AB is seeking a new helicopter pilot to its liming operations. The company is spreading limestone in areas ranging from Dalarna County in north to Skåne County in south, with a main focus in the south of Sweden.

The work goes on seven days a week during the company’s two seasons, which covers roughly eight months each year. Laroy Flyg’s pilots are hired on a full-time basis, but they are normally enjoying May, June and large parts of July off, as well as a winter leave between late December and early February each year.

Laroy Flyg has the following minimum requirements and favourable conditions:
• You have at least 1000 hrs PIC in helicopters, preferably with something in the sling some of that time.
• You are a responsible and safety oriented social person who is comfortable in the role as a team leader.
• You are fluent in Swedish (written and spoken).
• You are used to handling helicopters independently in the field.
• You have practical hands-on knowledge, preferably from working with various vehicles.
• You want to be a full-blooded bush pilot that masters the beautiful artwork of flying a heavy loaded AS350B3e in tough flying conditions.

Laroy Flyg adds that if you consider yourself having relevant experience in the AS350, but do not fully comply with the required flight time, you may still be interesting for the position.

The company uses individual wage settings and it puts more emphasis on personal qualities/skills than on how many flying hours you have and how long ago it was you started flying.

Personnel wanted at Värmland-Dalarna HEMS

[Mora] Kommunalförbundet Ambulanshelikopter Värmland-Dalarna (KAVD) is looking for new co-workers to its emergency medical helicopter operations in Karlstad and Mora. The company, which is structured as a local federation shared by Värmland's County Council and Dalarna's County Council, is currently operating an EC 135 P2 in Karlstad, and it is expecting to launch a second EMS service in Dalarna by the summer/autumn of 2015. The 24-hour-alert air unit is continuously manned by one pilot, one anaesthetic doctor and one HEMS crew member (HCM). KAVD is currently in the process of acquiring brand new helicopters for Karlstad and Mora in order to replace the temporary EC 135.

KAVD is recruiting the following titles (Swedish only):

PILOTS - minimum requirements:
• CPL(H) with IR(H)
• 1000 hours flight time (helicopters)
• 500 hours PIC (helicopters)
• Fluent in Swedish (written and oral)
• Good proficiency in English
• Valid Class 1 medical

Qualifying properties (pilots): MCC, IR ME, ATPL(H), ATPL theory, NVG experience, flight instructor.

TECHNICIANS - minimum requirements:
• EASA Part 66 B1 aircraft maintenance licence (helicopter)
• Minimum five years of experience
• Good knowledge in Part 145 and Part M

Qualifying properties (technician): B2 qualification, license in EC 135.

HEMS CREW MEMBERS - minimum requirements:
• Specialized nurse
• Extensive pre-hospital EMS experience
• Emergency vehicle driving training and experience
• Class B driver’s license

Archipelago closed after suspected underwater intrusion
20 October, 2014
[Stockholm] A large military operation is currently investigating possible foreign state underwater activity in Stockholm’s archipelago. The Swedish Armed Forces reports three credible sightings, with the first one dated October 17. The military has launched a naval operation in a scale unseen since the Cold War, when the Swedish Navy routinely hunted for submarines in these waters. Several helicopters from the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing, including naval HKP 15Bs, are deployed in the operation.

Moments after 2 PM today, two large parts of Stockholm’s archipelago were closed off for air traffic due to the operation. The temporary restricted areas, which covers parts of the south- and centre of Stockholm’s archipelago, comes in addition to the Swedish Transport Agency’s activation of all other stationary restricted areas in the region.

iTell Helicopters becomes Scandinavian Helicopter Center

[Västerås] The Swedish flight school iTell Helicopters is changing name to Scandinavian Helicopter Center. The new brand was inaugurated through an open-day arrangement at the base in Västerås on Saturday, October 18.

Scandinavian Helicopter Center, or simply Helicenter, will maintain, and expand, the line of business that has been set by iTell Helicopters since the start in the autumn of 2009. It is focused in pilot training and the sales of new Robinson helicopters, as well as dealing with pre-owned helicopters.

The company cooperates with Scandinavian Aviation Academy (SAA) in order to facilitate commercial pilot training (CPL) and type rating programmes. This team has a government contract for two classes of 10 civil helicopter pilots each, with the first class starting in January 2015 and the second starting in January 2016. The pilots will gain a full ATPL(H)IR theory and a CPL(H) license with 135 flight hours each, funded by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education.

Helicenter offers instrument ratings in partnership with AH Flight School (owned by Arlanda Helicopter). The company further cooperates with Copterflyg (STORM Heliworks), through which it offers commercial helicopter operations like air taxi, photo flights and census operations.

Norsk Luftambulanse signs for an AW169

[Amsterdam] Norsk Luftambulanse (NLA) of Norway has signed a contract for one AW169 light twin-engined intermediate helicopter for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Norway. The contract was signed today at the Helitech 2014 exhibition that is held in Amsterdam. The helicopter will feature an advanced EMS mission configuration including state-of-the-art avionic solutions to enable night and low visibility operations and specific mission equipment such as a unique retractable Soft Terrain Ski solution.

The AW169 can accommodate one or two stretchers, either longitudinally or transversally, which is especially important for operations where in-flight stretcher recovery is required. The cabin can also accommodate wheeled stretchers and can be configured with a full suite of advanced life support equipment. This latest contract for the AW169 follows orders for the type in the EMS market in the UK and Middle East.

The AW169’s avionic suite introduces state-of-the-art technology including a full digital NVG compatible cockpit with three 8” x 10” large area displays (AMLCD) with enhanced graphics capability for maximized situational awareness. A 4-axis digital automatic flight control system (DAFCS) with dual Flight Management System (FMS) minimises crew workload allowing single/dual pilot VFR/IFR operations. The avionics suite also complies with satellite-based navigation, communication and surveillance requirements and has the capability to perform satellite-based IFR LPV (localizer performance with vertical guidance) approaches to maximize round-the-clock utilisation of the helicopter. Safety enhancing avionics such as Terrain Awareness Warning Systems, airborne collision avoidance systems can be added to the standard avionic configuration.

The AW169 helicopter is part of AgustaWestland’s family of new generation helicopters that also includes the AW139 and AW189. These helicopters all possess the same high-performance flight characteristics and safety features whilst sharing the same common cockpit concept and design philosophy. This approach facilitates synergies for operators of these models in areas such as training, maintenance and support.

Norsk Luftambulanse AS is a Norwegian air ambulance helicopter service operating eight of the country’s eleven air ambulance helicopter bases. NLA AS recently won the tender to open an additional base in Evenes in northern Norway. On October 1st, it also started delivering air ambulance services in Denmark from three new bases. NLA AS was, in 2006, the first air ambulance operator in Europe to use Point in Space (PinS) flight procedures, using satellite based navigation systems that enable them to carry out life-saving operations in adverse weather conditions. The company is owned by Norway’s largest non-profit membership organization with over 700,000 members, the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation, which is committed to saving lives by strengthening the air ambulance service through research, education and development.

First landing at new KS helipad in downtown Stockholm

[Stockholm] The very first helicopter has landed at the Karolinska University Hospital’s brand new helipad in Solna, near downtown Stockholm. The local EC 135 EMS helicopter SE-JFN, piloted by Richard Johansson of Scandinavian Medicopter, did the landing on Friday afternoon.

The new two-place helipad sits on top of a new trauma center that is being built as part of the construction of the “Nya Karolinska Sjukhuset” (NKS) project next to the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. The helipad, which is located approximately 200 meters from the existing one, is expected to handle up to 3000 landings annually, and it is dimensioned to take helicopters in sizes ranging up to the Swedish Armed Force’s NH90 (HKP14). It is constructed on a large amount of shock absorbers that will reduce the vibrations in the building when helicopters are operating. The landing(s) on Friday was performed in order to make noise measurements for the upcoming helicopter traffic. The heliport itself is planned to be operational by the end of 2016.

Norwegian Sea King in precautionary landing
29 September, 2014
[Bodø, Norway] A Norwegian Sea King made a precautionary landing southwest of Bodø earlier today. According to NRK, the aircraft was engaged in a hoist training when the cable snapped and impacted the main rotor hub. The helicopter, which had five people onboard at the moment, was able to fly to the nearby Støtt Island, where it made a safe landing.

Coptersafety's AW139 simulator ready for business
29 September, 2014
[Helsinki] Coptersafety Ltd announces that its AW139 full flight simulator (FFS) has received its EASA Level D certification from the Finnish CAA (Trafi) and that it is now ready for training. The new CAE series 3000 AW139 FFS is jointly developed by CAE and AgustaWestland, and it is based on the OEM data package.
The device is installed at Finnair Flight Academy next to Helsinki Airport, Finland. Both wet- and dry lease options are available to customers starting on 1 October this year.

Coptersafety is a Finnish helicopter training company with key personnel having a long experience and competence in the area of advanced helicopter training. Coptersafety’s training center, located next to Helsinki Airport, is open 24/7. In addition to the AW139 FFS training, Coptersafety’s committed team is focused on other cutting-edge courses such as Night Vision Goggles training.

Final report from ditched R44 in Stockholm

[Stockholm] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred in Tyresö, south east of Stockholm, on 26 August 2013.

The aircraft, a Swedish Robinson R44 Clipper II with the registration SE-JOE, was engaged in a water-sampling assignment in the Stockholm area. The crew consisted of one pilot and one crew member, whose task was to lower water sampling equipment into the lake whilst hovering above the water. Upon approach to the first lake, Lake Tyresö-Flaten, the pilot noticed that the water was calm and that it was difficult to estimate the height above the surface, and he thereby reduced the rate of descent. The pilot estimated the height to be roughly 5-10 meters when had still not obtained clear references to the water surface, why he started to arrest the sink rate further. At that same moment, the helicopter hit the water in a nose-up, right-bank, altitude and the tail boom broke loose. The pilot deployed the emergency floatation gear at the same time as the helicopter rolled over to the right. The pilot and crew member egressed the aircraft through the rear left door frame – both of them unharmed.

In its report, the Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) writes that the water sampling operation was not included in the helicopter company's s Air Operator Certificate (AOC). SHK states that the company's Operations Manual had no published method for approaching water surfaces in calm conditions without the support of other references or aids. It concludes that this aspect probably contributed to the fact that the closing speed and distance to the surface was misjudged, which resulted in a collision with the water. SHK leaves no recommendations in the report.

Fatal helicopter accident in Denmark

[Denmark] A private Robinson R44 was lost in an accident off the eastern coast of the island of Samsø in central Denmark. Three people were found dead, and a forth occupant was still missing on Saturday. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but the Danish Accident Investigation Board (AIB) has started an investigation.

The acquisition will secure the growing business focused on maintenance of helicopters, helicopter components and equipment as well as engines, upgrades and modifications, spare parts and electronic products.

Jämtlands Flyg is recruiting a new pilot

[Östersund] The well-established helicopter company Jämtlands Flyg is looking for a new mountain pilot for reindeer herding operations. The pilot is preliminary needed from September to December, but the job can lead to a full-time employment in the future.

The minimum requirement is 1000 flight hours, experience in mountain flying and reindeer herding, as well as a valid type rating on the R44. You need to be fluent in Swedish. A valid type rating on the EC120 is a plus.

Go-ahead for Värmland’s HEMS
22 August, 2014
[Karlstad] Today Värmland’s County Council announced that it has been granted the Swedish Transport Agency’s permission to commence its HEMS operation. The permission allows daytime VFR operations in a first step, but it will be extended by adding IFR- and night operations.

“Finally, it feels great that we are up and running”, says health director Tobias Kjellberg of Värmland County Council.

The EC135 helicopter will be operating from a temporary station at Karlstad Airport, where it will be manned by one pilot, one anesthetist and one HEMS crew member.

Final report after Bell 47 accident in Fällfors
22 August, 2014
[Skellefteå] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred in Fällfors, northeast of Skellefteå, on 23 August 2013.

The aircraft, a Swedish Bell 47 G-2 with the registration SE-HEO, had been flying to an outdoor exhibition centre in order to visit the show and to take some photos. The pilot and his passenger had removed one of the helicopter’s doors and left it at a nearby field, and following completion of the photo shoot the aircraft returned to the field in order to pick the door up again. Upon landing the helicopter ended up in an uncontrolled state and hit the ground at an impact estimated to be equivalent to 550 ft per minute or more. The aircraft was severely damaged by the accident and an extensive post-impact fire. The two occupants were seriously injured, but they both survived.

The SHK found that the main rotor blade fixings had traces of the blades being bent upward and forward, which meant that the rotor blades had probably coned. The investigation of the wreckage revealed no other errors or malfunctions relating to engine or flight controls. The Board concluded that the cause of the accident was that the pilot, for unknown reasons, lost control of the helicopter at the final stage of the landing. SHK left no recommendations following the report.

Many helicopters fought massive forest fire
20 August, 2014
[Ramnäs/Sala] A record-breaking forest fire has raged in central Sweden for many days, starting in the afternoon of 31 July 2014. The fire developed to the biggest wildfire yet seen in the country in modern time and the situation was upgraded to a national emergency within six days.

The rescue work called for a large number of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from a wide range of units and operators. Authorities, who evacuated more than 1 000 citizens, were worried that the fire would reach the city of Norberg if the inferno continued to spread, but that was avoided. The most intense day, which recorded temperatures near 35°C and heavy winds, saw the fire spreading more than 10 kilometers to the northwest. When the fire calmed down the affected area covered roughly 20 kilometers in a northwest-southeast direction and approximately eight kilometers at the widest point. The fire, which left one person dead and one critically injured, was deemed under control in the morning of 11 August. It covered a total of 13 800 hectare (approximately 34 100 acre) and destroyed roughly 25 buildings.

At the most, more than 20 air units were deployed in the area. Military and civil, national and international – all teamed up to fight the fire. The civil operators Stockholms Helikoptertjänst, HeliAir Sweden, Scandair Helicopter, Arlanda Helicopter and Helitrans were engaged in the water bombings, as well as up to four HKP 10 Super Pumas that were engaged from the early stages of the fire. Four fixed-wing firefighting aircraft from Italy and France, facilitated by the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), participated as well.

The Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing deployed several UH-60M Black Hawks (HKP 16) to the scene for reconnaissance and evacuation. On 4 August, the most intense day, a Black Hawk courageously saved five forest workers that had been forced to flee into a lake in the fire area. The people were rescued in very problematic flying conditions, but they all escaped unharmed. Earlier the same day a Black Hawk crew evacuated nine volunteers that had been trapped by the flames.

The Swedish Coast Guard deployed a Dash 8 aircraft as an overhead on-scene coordinator and the Helicopter Wing utilized a few HKP 15s (Agusta 109) for heat-sensing operations and documentation tasks.

The helicopter units that were used to battle the fire were:
3000-litre class: 2 helicopters (Bell 214)
2000-litre class: 3-4 helicopters (HKP 10 Super Puma)
1000-litre class: 4 helicopters (AS350B3, AS350B2 and SA.315 Lama)
600-litre class: 2 helicopters (AS350BA and Long Ranger)
500-litre class: 4 helicopters (MD500)

The four 6000-litre CL-415 water bomber airplanes worked on the between 6-10 August. Adding to that, two Jet Ranger helicopters were used in a parallel effort to protect the Engelsberg Ironwork.

Starting from 10 August, the air units were gradually reduced due to the damped progress of the fire. From 13 August a team of three civil water-bombing helicopters remained for the final air-extinction works. The last extinguishing helicopters left on 17 August, 18 days after the fire broke out. The Swedish Armed Forces kept some reconnaissance helicopters on scene for yet some time.

On 13 August 32 of the worst affected citizens were given the chance to see the overwhelming damage first-handed through a flight in the Helicopter Wing’s Black Hawks.

New simulator to Northern Helicopters

[Gothenburg] Today Northern Helicopters announced that it has signed a contract for a helicopter simulator that will serve for the Instrument Multi engine courses as well as the MCC courses. The simulator is manufactured by Elite which is one of most well established simulator manufacturers for fixed base simulators, says the flight school.

The simulator is built on the AS355 type, which is the actual aircraft that the school utilizes for the practical flight training. The simulator is estimated to be fully operational in November 2014 at the training centre in Gothenburg, Sweden.

[Farnborough, England] Today Bell Helicopter issued a press release where it announced that it has signed a purchase agreement with the Swedish National Police for seven Bell 429 helicopters to the Swedish Police Wing. The aircraft will be used for police operations including surveillance, reconnaissance, maintaining public order, aerial photography, aid in rescue missions and police transportation. The Swedish National Police were the first and only helicopter police unit in Sweden when they began operating Bell 47 G-2A in 1964 to complete their duties. In addition to the new Bell 429 fleet, the Swedish National Police currently have a Bell 206 Jet Ranger that serves as a flight trainer at the organisation’s own flight school.

“We are honoured the Swedish National Police have chosen us to continue providing them with the aircraft their missions demand,” said Patrick Moulay, managing director in Europe. “We are thankful for the opportunity to help the Swedish National Police protect and serve their country.”

The aircraft will be heavily customized in Bell Piney Flat facilities before their delivery to the Swedish National Police in 2015.

Helicopter accident north of Stockholm

[Stockholm] A single-engine turbine helicopter was badly damaged in an emergency landing near Kungsängen in Stockholm this afternoon. The aircraft was heading for Bromma Airport when something went wrong and the pilot was forced to perform an emergency landing. The helicopter was damaged upon impact, but the pilot was unharmed. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but it is under examination by the Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens haverikommission, SHK).

Final report after main rotor separation

[Porjus] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred in Porjus on 8 November 2012.

The aircraft, a Swedish Bell 206B Jet Ranger with the registration SE-HOM, was engaged in a periodic operator’s proficiency check in the vicinity of the Porjus village, carrying one pilot and an instructor on board. The experienced crew had just performed an autorotation landing, when a loud noise and vibrations that corresponded to the rotor RPM suddenly evolved. Moments later, the whole main rotor separated from the helicopter and it landed in the snow approximately 10 meters to the left of the airframe. The helicopter remained upright with no injuries to the occupants.

The SHK concludes that the fracture on the main rotor driveshaft was caused by a design flaw in the freewheel unit’s lubrication system that allowed for possible debris to obstruct the oil flow to the unit. The possible debris where considered to be in such size that they could be present in a PART 145 maintenance shop. SHK recommends EASA and Transport Canada to work for a reduction of the lubrication system's vulnerability to debris and to inform operators of advices how to avoid possible contamination of the oil in the freewheel unit.

Norsk Luftambulanse to run Narvik HEMS

[Norway] Norsk Luftambulanse (NLA) has been awarded a contract for the operation of a new air ambulance base at Evenes, Norway. The National Air Ambulance Service of Norway, locally designated Luftambulansetjenesten ANS, announced the assignment on 18 June.

The new emergency medical operation will be stationed at Harstad / Narvik Airport Evenes, and it will employ a brand new Airbus Helicopters EC 145 T2. The inception date is set for 1 May 2015, and the contract runs until 31 May 2018. The three-year period is shorter than other HEMS contracts in order to harmonize the assignment cycle with the contract periods at the other 11 HEMS stations in the country. The contract is valued at 43 million NOK a year (approx €5,1 million EUR).

- We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this contract. Meanwhile, we are humble because we know that we have competed against two skilled operators in this tender. This is very exciting and we look forward to be working with Health Noth and the National Air Ambulance Service as we will jointly establish and operate this base, said Syver Leivestad, CEO of Norsk Luftambulanse AS.

The new helicopter will be manned by one pilot, a rescue man and an anaesthesiologist. The team will cover the Lofoten region, Vesterålen and Sør-Troms, where the local residents currently have a lower availability of EMS helicopters than other cities in Norway, according to ANS.

The current EMS helicopter stations in Norway are situated in Arendal, Bergen, Brønnøysund, Dombås, Førde, Lørenskog (Oslo), Stavanger, Trondheim, Tromsø, Ål and Ålesund. NLA is operating eight EMS stations and Lufttransport AS is operating the remaining three.

In addition to the new station in Narvik/Evenes Norsk Luftambulanse is also in the process of preparing the newly awarded operation of Denmark’s new nation-wide emergency medical helicopter structure. The company will establish a total of three air ambulance stations in Billund, Ringsted and Skive, starting from 1 October 2014.

Norsk Luftambulanse in Danish EMS operation

[Denmark] On 1 July 2014 the Nordic Air Ambulance team was thanked for its service in the HEMS trial period in Karup, Denmark. The operation will now be inherited by Norsk Luftambulanse (NLA), which will operate the Karup helicopter in cooperation with SOS until 20 September 2014. Starting on 1 October 2014 Norsk Luftambulanse will commence the operation of Denmark’s new nation-wide emergency medical helicopter structure – with a total of three air-ambulance stations in Billund, Ringsted and Skive.

Fatal fall from helicopter in Norway

[Norway] A Swedish man fell from an offshore search and rescue helicopter during a medical transport yesterday morning. The aircraft, an EC 225, was en-route from the Troll A platform to Bergen when the patient reportedly broke loose and fell from the helicopter just off the coast of Sotra. Norwegian TV2 states that the body was located in the sea within an hour after the fall.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but it is currently being investigated by the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board.

Värmland’s new EMS helicopter has arrived

[Karlstad] Värmland County’s new air ambulance is here. It arrived in Karlstad in mid June, and it is expected to be operative in August. The longed-for helicopter, a French EC 135 P2, is here on an interim basis, while waiting for the permanent acquisition process to be finalized.

The helicopter will be operating from a temporary EMS station at Karlstad Airport, where it will function in a newly established intensive-care unit that consists of one helicopter and one specially equipped emergency response car. One pilot, one anesthetist and one “HEMS crew member” (a specially trained flight nurse) will be manning the unit in a 24-hour alert.

- This feels good because we can offer an even better, faster and safer medical care to the most seriously ill and injured patients, says Fredrik Larsson, county board chairman.

The staff will now focus in training and preparation works before the formal Air Operator Certificate (AOC) is in place. Once in service the county has signed agreements with its neighboring municipalities and counties that allow an unlimited regional coverage in both Sweden and Norway.

- This boundless coverage has been our goal all the time, and it means that we will work together across the borders. The helicopter that is closest to the patient will perform the mission, said Tobias Kjellberg, health care manager, Värmland County Council.

Värmland’s County will become the first region in Sweden to operate its own EMS helicopter. The structure corresponds to the “Vård på Vingar” study that was published by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKL) in September 2012. Dalarna’s County will be the second to follow through joining Värmland’s AOC in a shared local federation. Dalarna is expected to be operative in mid 2015. The federation is now looking for further counties to join the structure.

Background
In June 2010 Värmland’s County Council decided that the regional HEMS coverage had to be ensured from mid 2014, and in November 2012 the council decided that the region was to have its own aircraft. The council took the formal decision to buy an own helicopter instead of leasing it in February 2013, and following a public tender the choice was set for the new Eurocopter EC 145 T2. However, the decision was appealed, and in May 2014 the Swedish Court of Appeal legally canceled the decision, forcing the council to redo the whole tender. The newly arrived EC 135 will now serve as a temporary stand-in aircraft while waiting for the new tender to be finalized.

Five people onboard in Norwegian helicopter accident

[Norway] A commercial helicopter carrying five people was involved in an accident at Hjerkinn shooting range in Dovre, Oppland (Norway), at noon today. All of the occupants, four adults and one child, survived the accident, but two of them obtained minor injuries. The aircraft, a new Airbus Helicopters AS 350 B3e, was badly damaged. It was engaged in a routine reconnaissance operation for the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency when the accident struck.

The cause is unknown at this time, but the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board is examining the accident.

Stockholm opens up for second EMS helicopter

[Stockholm] Stockholm’s County Council’s board for public health and medical care has decided to open up for the possibility to operate a second EMS helicopter in Stockholm all year round. The “summer helicopter”, an extra EC 135 that serves as a supplement to the primary EMS helicopter between 15 May and 15 September each year, is considered an important resource for the isolated parts of the county according to the board.

The extra helicopter replied to 524 emergency medical calls in the summer of 2002, compared to 2088 emergency calls for the primary helicopter for the whole year. The summer helicopter has been operated each summer since 2007, when it was resumed by the political “Alliance” after three years on hold.

Final report after Kiruna accident

[Kiruna] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report following an accident that occurred north of Kiruna on 26 September 2013.

The aircraft, a Swedish Eurocopter EC 120B Colibri with the registration SE-JHH, was engaged in a reindeer herding approximately 85 km north of Kiruna when the customer expressed the need to airlift a broken quad bike to a small village nearby. The helicopter took off with the quad attached to a 12-meter sling below. The power was deemed sufficient. Following the lift-off the aircraft soon turned downwind and started to settle, resulting in the load impacting the ground. The quad was dragged a short time as the pilot flared to cushion the landing, but the flare did not prevent the helicopter from hitting the ground. The aircraft ended up resting on its right side. All three people onboard, the pilot and two crewmembers, and a dog managed to evacuate the wreckage without any serious injuries.

The SHK concludes that the difficulties involved in the mission were underestimated, which is believed to have laid ground for the accident. The Board further concludes that a misinterpretation of the wind direction and the local inclination might have contributed to the mishap. SHK recommends the Swedish Transport Agency to ensure that national aerial work operators will add hands-on training in emergency cargo release techniques to its training programs.

Swedish Black Hawks leaves Afghanistan

[Afghanistan] The last two Swedish HKP 16 Black Hawks have returned to their home base in Linköping, Sweden, following the deployment in Afghanistan. The helicopters were part of a four-ship unit that was engaged in the Swedish Air Element’s medevac alert for the International Security Assistance Force at Camp Marmal.

The Swedish Black Hawks have been active in Afghanistan since March 2013, when they took over after the Swedish HKP 10B Super Pumas that had been used for medical transport since April 2, 2011.

A total of 300 people have been working with the Swedish helicopter units in Afghanistan since 2011. The “SAE ISAF UH-60” unit alone, designated ICEPAC, consisted of approximately 40 people at the time, with people coming and going on a regular basis.

The HKP 16s held their last medevac alert in mid May, and they have now been returned to Sweden in cargo planes. The helicopters are now put on a one-month quarantine before they can get some maintenance and eventually return to national service for the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing.

EastAir becomes Hummingbird Aviation Services

[Stockholm] The executive airplane company and helicopter operator EastAir is changing name to Hummingbird Aviation Services. The shift marks the start of a new expansive phase, according to the company.

“Our new name, logotype and graphic expression are visual signs of our transition to a full aviation house”, says CEO Martin Johansson. By adding more aircraft and personnel to its new ownership structure Hummingbird Aviation Services aims to become the leading executive aviation company in Scandinavia, both in fixed-wings and helicopters.

Hummingbird Aviation Services provides executive flights and inter-hospital emergency medical transports with its fleet of jet planes; two LearJet 45s, two Citation CJ3s and one Falcon 900. It offers flight training and a range of helicopter operations with its R22 and R44 helicopters. The company plans to build an own business terminal at Stockholm-Bromma Airport, where a technical department will fit as well.

Hummingbird Aviation Services / EastAir is owned by Jan Åke Glommen and Martin Johansson since the turn of the year. The former owner, Lars Österwall, remains as accountable manager (AM).

Airbus Helicopters to showcase EC175 in Norway

[Marignane, France] Airbus Helicopters, formerly known as Eurocopter, reveals that it is planning to showcase its brand new 7-metric-ton class EC175 on a North Sea Tour, which includes a stop in Norway.

In conjunction with the North Sea Tour, Airbus plans to announce a 300-kg increase in the EC175’s maximum take-off weight, boosting it to 7 800 kg. The higher MTOW will offer the capacity to carry additional payload or to extend the range by roughly 40NM. The certification of the enhanced take-off weight is planned before the end of 2016, following a flight test campaign next year.

The EC175’s demonstration tour brings it to Norwich, England on 19 May; Aberdeen, Scotland on 20-22 May and Stavanger, Norway, on 23 May.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certified the helicopter in January this year, and roughly 15 airframes are now being produced in the final assembly line. The medium-sized 16-seat rotorcraft is powered by twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 (C67E) engines and it features a new avionics suite in order to reduce pilot workload. Approximately 64 helicopters are on order, with the first delivery expected this year.

Heli tactics instructor course moves to Sweden

[Vidsel] Students from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden are currently taking part in the second Helicopter Tactics Instructor Course (HTIC 14) at the Vidsel Test Range in the north of Sweden.

The course, jointly hosted by the Sweden and the UK, will train both a new cadre of tactics instructors as well as delivering bespoke instructional training to returning graduates from last year. In total the course lasts eight weeks across two phases, a Classroom and Simulator Phase which ran between March 23 and April 13 in the UK, and the live flying phase hosted by Sweden from April 27 to May 18. In total 20 students from the participating countries are taking part as well as seven observers from Czech Republic, Belgium, Portugal and EDA.

The complete course is part of the EDA helicopter training system and directly linked with the Helicopter Exercise Programme (HEP) and the Helicopter Tactics Course (HTC). The combination of these courses helps provide a comprehensive approach to helicopter training in Europe, designed to raise standards and improve interoperability for international missions.

The HTIC delivers an opportunity to expose helicopter crews to the training methodology and tactical knowledge of another Member State. It is also the first step in delivering a sustainable European course where successful graduates could be awarded a qualification recognised by all the participating countries. Additionally, on returning home, these graduates can pass on the common understanding and methodologies to their own crews and can interact with the other helicopter programs as mentors.

The newly trained instructors will have the opportunity to harness and enhance their skills as part of the EDA’s Hot Blade Exercise in Ovar, Portugal in July.

For HTIC, the attending helicopter assets were 1 OH-58 KIOWA (AT), 1 MI 171 (CZ), 1 CH-53 (DE), 1 UH-1D (DE), 1 NH90 (SE), 2 AS332 (UK, Super Puma). As well as these helicopters, 2 UK HAWK fast jets, 4 Czech L-159 ALCA and 2 Swedish GRIPENS took part.

Helicopter procurement canceled by court order

[Karlstad] The Court of Appeal has legally canceled Värmland County Council’s decision following a public tender for the procurement of a new EMS helicopter. Värmland County had chosen the new Airbus EC 145 T2 for its very first HEMS station in Karlstad, but the decision was appealed. The Administrative Court approved the county’s procurement, but the verdict was later appealed to the Court of Appeal that has now adjourned the purchase.

Värmland’s County has issued a statement saying that they are surprised by the outcome, but that their current goal is to be operational in August through the procurement of a provisional helicopter. The arrival of a permanent helicopter will be delayed as a result of the verdict.

The canceled tender will have consequences for Dalarna’s County. The region has declared its intention to join Värmland County’s acquisition by utilizing the available option for a second EC 145 T2 in Värmland’s deal. Dalarna’s EMS helicopter is planned to be operational from mid-2015.

Limited HEMS in Gotland

[Gotland] The new EMS helicopter that is being used on the island of Gotland has been partly halted due to its limited payload acceptance. Representatives have told Swedish Radio (SR) that the new Bell 429 has been reduced to covering only local EMS missions, and that the inter-hospital transports between the island and the mainland have to be solved by other air ambulance units. The operations will return to normal, on a temporary basis, once the previous EMS helicopter, an EC145, has returned to the island. The customer, Region Gotland, and the operator will now start to administer the questions surrounding the weight issues.

The modern Bell 429 is currently limited to a maximum certified takeoff weight of 3175 kg (7000 lb), which is its original weight limit. A total of 17 countries worldwide have approved a weight exemption for the 429, which boosts the MTOW by some ~230 kg, to 3402 kg (7500 lb). The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has not approved the increased gross weight, and neither has the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Some of the countries that have accepted Bell Helicopter’s request include Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, India, China, Mexico and Nigeria.

Bell 429 is a sophisticated eight-place twin-engine helicopter developed by Bell Helicopter Textron. The aircraft made its first flight in February 2007, and its production has reached a couple hundred airframes this far. Gotland’s EMS helicopter is the first Bell 429 in the Nordic countries.

New EMS helicopter meets local criticism

[Gotland] The new EMS helicopter in Gotland has met criticism in the media due to its current weight limit in the European Union. The newspaper Gotlands Tidningar states that the helicopter’s limited maximum takeoff weight rules out the option to bring a doctor in addition to the standard crew when needed by a critically ill patient. The municipality of Gotland, “Region Gotland”, says that the hospital will use the local Search and Rescue helicopter in exceptional cases. The normal crew on board the brand new Bell 429 consists of one pilot, one flight nurse and one HEMS crew member.

The helicopter model is currently limited to a maximum (certified) takeoff weight of 3175 kg (7000 lb), which is its original weight limit. Robinson R66 receives EASA certification

[Torrance, CA] On April 30, 2014, four years after initial FAA certification, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued its type certificate for the Robinson R66 Turbine helicopter. Robinson says that it is pleased to add the EASA member states to the now over fifty countries (including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Russia, South Africa, and the U.S.) that have certified the R66.

The EASA certification marks an important milestone for Robinson, as two-thirds of the company’s sales have historically come from foreign customers. With certification finally in place, Robinson can deliver its current backlog of European orders and focus on strengthening its presence in the European market. Presently, there are sixteen R66 service centres, of which thirteen are dealers, approved in Europe.

Currently priced at $839,000 USD, Robinson designed the 5-place R66 to be a mid-size, low maintenance turbine helicopter that would perform as well or better than its competitors, but at a lower cost. To date, Robinson has delivered over 500 R66s and estimates total fleet hours at over 160,000. In response to customer feedback, glass and touch-screen avionics were recently added to the R66’s options list.

When the R66 reaches the Nordic Helicopter Industry, it will join a market that currently sees a 33% share of light single-engine 4-5-seat helicopters (R44, Jet Ranger, EC120 and MD500). The share is dominated by the R44, which has 19% of the market.

Four people in Icelandic helicopter accident

[Iceland] A commercial helicopter was badly damaged in an accident on the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in southern Iceland earlier today. The helicopter was involved in a filming task when something went wrong and the aircraft impacted the ground. The pilot and three-member film crew who were onboard at the time were unharmed. The root cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but it is under examination by the Icelandic Transport Accident Investigation Board (Rannsóknarnefnd samgönguslysa).

Dalarna County to operate its own EMS helicopter

[Mora] Dalarna’s County Council has decided that the new local air ambulance service will be operated by the council rather than subcontracting an external company for the purpose. The helicopter, which will be stationed in Mora, is expected to be operational from mid-2015.

The newspaper Dalarnas Tidningar says that Dalarna County and Värmland County have decided to form a local federation in order to operate its two helicopters through a joint organization. The decision corresponds to the “Vård på Vingar” study that was published by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKL) in September 2012.

Dalarna’s new helicopter is expected to come at a cost of 62,7 million SEK (approx. €6,9 million EUR) and it is calculated to save roughly 25 lives each year.

Both counties have chosen the Airbus EC 145 T2 for its operations, but the procurement is currently undergoing a formal appeal process, why the official order for a specific helicopter type has not yet been finalized. Värmland’s HEMS is expected to be operational in Karlstad from mid-2014, and its structure is currently coming to place.

MediCopter's new Bell 429 enters service

[Visby] Scandinavian MediCopter, a subsidiary of Scandinavian AirAmbulance, has launched its Bell 429 in HEMS operations for Region Gotland in Visby. The aircraft, the first one of its type in Scandinavia, was placed in medical alert yesterday, and it has already done its first mission.

Gotland’s EMS helicopter is primarily engaged in inter-hospital transports between the island and various specialty hospitals on the mainland, but it is also used for local primary emergency responses and incubator transports. The helicopter, which flies roughly 500 missions a year, is crewed by one pilot, one anesthetic nurse, one HEMS crew member and, upon request, a doctor. The aircraft is stationed at the airport in Visby.

The contract for a new EMS helicopter was sealed in September 2012, when Gotland’s Municipality (Region Gotland) selected MediCopter as its medical air service provider for the next 5+2 years, starting from April 2014. MediCopter has been involved in the HEMS operations in Visby since 2007, when its predecessor Lufttransport Svenska purchased SOS Helikoptern Gotland.
The new helicopter (SE-JRC) replaces an EC145, a type that has been in service on the picturesque island since it replaced a BK117 in December 2005. The Bell 429 is the first Bell product to be used in the EMS market in Sweden since the Swedish Armed Forces seized its Bell 412 operations in Lycksele in December 2002.

Scandinavian AirAmbulance to join Avincis Group

[Östersund] Scandinavian Air Ambulance (SAA), owner of Scandinavian MediCopter (SMC), today announced its intention to join the Avincis Group, a leading international provider of mission critical aviation services worldwide.

SAA’s operations would continue, but they would run alongside Avincis’ existing companies, which deliver medical emergency, search & rescue, firefighting and energy support services across eight countries worldwide with a fleet of 343 aircraft.

The total enterprise value derived from the purchase price amounts to SEK707 million (approximately €80 million). The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions and regulatory approvals prior to 30 June 2014.

SAA’s fleet of 22 aircraft annually transports more than 14,000 patients across Sweden, Finland and Denmark, making it a natural fit for Avincis. In 2013 Avincis flew 51,450 emergency medical service missions and carried out 2,100 sea and mountain rescues.

SAA would continue its existing operations serving customers across Scandinavia, and would continue to manage the business. SAA founder and CEO Henry Hansen would continue to lead SAA and all Avincis’ emergency services in Scandinavia. In addition, Henry Hansen would reinvest a significant portion of the equity of SAA.

As a part of Avincis, SAA would be provided with the organisational capability, resources and know-how to allow it to continue to grow and develop its operations throughout the Nordic region.

Avincis Group CEO James Drummond said: “SAA has a strong team and business which is very well aligned to the Avincis mission and values, and would bring not only Nordic expertise and experience, but 160 skilled people with an enviable track record of saving lives. I look forward to being able to welcome them to our Group and look forward to helping them grow the business.”

Final report after water bucket rollover

[Gällivare] The Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens Haverikommission, SHK) has published its final report after an accident that occurred near Gällivare on 15 August 2011, involving a Swedish helicopter with the registration SE-HVI.

The aircraft, a Bell 206L-3 Long Ranger, was engaged in a water-bombing mission at the Aitik copper mine in Gällivare in order to prevent dust from forming in the dry tailings pond. The pilot had been spreading more than 80 rounds of water that day, and he was currently in the process of filling up the Bambi Bucket at a nearby lake. On lift-out from the pound a suspension line belonging to the bucket got caught in the rear left skid, resulting in a subsequent rollover. The aircraft impacted a swampy part of the lake and ended up resting on its side. The sole person on board, a highly experienced pilot, escaped with minor injuries.

The SHK concludes that the accident was caused by a dynamic rollover that was triggered by the bucket suspension line that was entangled in the rear left skid. The Board says that the position of the sun and possible shadows could have reduced the pilot’s ability to see the bucket through the cargo mirror. It further states that the skid gear layout made it possible for a suspension line to get caught whilst in flight. SHK recommends the Swedish Transport Agency and EASA to ensure that operators have established operative limits that covers possible risks in the helicopter design during sling-load operations.

Flightlog Backup launches flight planning tool

[Gothenburg] The Swedish company Flightlog Backup announces that it has launched a user-friendly flight planning tool that will be integrated with its free online logbook backup system. The tool will assist pilots with loads of useful calculations, including estimated flight time, fuel burn, ground speeds, wind correction angles, as well as ATC frequencies and TAF/METAR forecasts along the planned route. The flight planning is done using an interactive map where all airspace details are visible, and the end result - a detailed flight plan - is simultaneously being generated by the system. The instrument is primarily focused in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland, but the coverage will be expanded gradually.

“By launching this sophisticated tool, and making it easily accessible online, we aim to give the pilot community a well-needed ease from the flight planning headache”, says co-founder Daniel Skoglund. “This emphasizes our ambition to be the pilot’s best friend when it comes to the everyday pre-flight and post-flight paper work”, he continues.

Flightlog Backup International AB is a Swedish aviation consultant company that is administered by two helicopter pilots, Michael Elmeskog and Daniel Skoglund. The company develops tools for pilots and operators that serve to ease the everyday administration and document handling. The “FLB” website consists of several modules that can be integrated in a close-knit web by synchronizing the free pilot logbooks with a wide range of licensed management units.

Swedish government to fund pilot training

[Gothenburg/Västerås] Two Swedish helicopter schools, Svensk Pilotutbildning (SPU) and Scandinavian Aviation Academy (SAA), have been awarded an agreement with the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education for training of 30 new helicopter pilots a year. After acceptance to the two-year 400-point higher vocational education programme, the pilots will gain a full ATPL(H)IR theory and a CPL(H) license with 135 flight hours. The Swedish Government will be funding the programme in order to safeguard the availability of qualified pilots for national parapublic and civil helicopter operations in the future.

Svensk Pilotutbildning, based in Gothenburg, has been granted 20 slots for new helicopter pilots and Scandinavian Aviation Academy, with its heart in Västerås, has been granted 10 slots.

Roland Winsell, CEO of SPU, says: “The fact that the government will fund these spots on a yearly basis is very fulfilling and it acknowledges that the general public benefits from programmes like this”.

SPU started with fixed wing training operations in 1998. The helicopter training division was established in 2004, and it has grown to become one of the leading schools in Sweden. SAA has a long experience in fixed-wing pilot training, and the school has progressively been adding the helicopter segment to its training plan through a cooperation with iTell Helicopters.

SMA Helicopter Rescue embodied in Sjöfartsverket

[Norrköping] SMA Helicopter Rescue, the helicopter branch of the Swedish Maritime Administration, was formally incorporated in the agency today. The structural change means that all rescue helicopters and the 100-person staff gets directly involved in the Maritime Administration instead of the daughter company SMA Helicopter Rescue. The biggest change lies in the change from a civil air operator to a state organisation. All Swedish SAR helicopters will now be operated in "State Flights”, just like the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing, the Swedish Police Wing and the Swedish Coast Guard.

SMA Helicopter Rescue derives from the old helicopter operator Norrlandsflyg, which was established back in 1961. Norrlandsflyg operated the Swedish search and rescue helicopters on behalf of the Swedish Maritime Administration between 2002-2011. Norrlandsflyg was acquired by the Maritime Administration on 1 November 2011. The helicopter division changed name to SMA Helicopter Rescue later the same year.

The Swedish Maritime Administration is now operating a large fleet of Sikorsky S-76 helicopters that are deployed at five SAR stations throughout the country. Seven brand new AgustaWestland AW139s will gradually replace the Sikorskys, with the initial delivery already completed in September 2013. The first AW139 is expected to enter SAR alert in April this year.

AirAmbulance opens its 10th HEMS base

[Copenhagen, Denmark] On 1 January Scandinavian AirAmbulance (SAA) opened its tenth helicopter base - a HEMS station in Ringsted, Denmark. The Danish HEMS station is situated southwest of Copenhagen and it employs a single-pilot EC145 (SE-JJC) that sits in alert 24 hours around the clock. The helicopter is operated in partnership wih Falck Ambulans on a January-October interim contract with Region Sjælland and Region Hovedstaden.

The region has had an EMS helicopter since 2010, when the German company DRF Air Rescue was awarded a three-year daytime evaluation period. The service made history by becoming the first regular EMS operation in Denmark. It has now been inherited by SAA, which has strengthened the unit’s availability by adding the capacity to fly at night helped by night vision goggles (NVG).

Denmark is planning to launch its new EMS helicopter structure in October 2014. The operation of the three air stations, one in Ringsted, one in Skive and one in Billund, has been awarded to the Norwegian company Norsk Luftambulanse (NLA).

Scandinavian AirAmbulance is a large Swedish company that operates both intensive care airplanes and EMS helicopters throughout large parts of Scandinavia. It has six Swedish helicopter bases; Gällivare, Lycksele, Stockholm, Uppsala, Visby and Östersund, three Finnish bases; Kuopio, Rovaniemi and Uleåborg, as well as the new Danish base in Ringsted. The helicopters are operated through the company’s helicopter branch, Scandinavian MediCopter (SMC). SMC has a fleet of Dauphin, EC135 and EC145 helicopters, and it is currently in the process of taking delivery of its very first Bell 429.

Fatal EMS helicopter accident in Norway

[Oslo, Noway] A Norwegian emergency medical service helicopter was involved in a fatal accident northwest of Oslo today. The EC135 helicopter from Lørenskog was approaching the scene of a truck accident when it impacted the ground near the E16 highway at at Sollihøgda. There were three people on board the helicopter at the time of the accident. Two crew members, the pilot and a doctor, were confirmed dead on scene. A third man was airlifted to the Ullevål University Hospital with serious injuries.

Norwegian media shows video clips of the helicopter hitting power lines prior to the impact, but the root cause of the accident is unknown at this time. The tragic occurrence is currently being examined by the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board (AIBN).

Helicopter accident in Ystad

[Ystad] A helicopter was involved in an accident at Rögla, northwest of Ystad, earlier today. The two occupants survived without any serious injuries. The aircraft was inspecting power lines in the region when the accident occurred.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but it is being examined by the Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens haverikommission, SHK).

Eurocopter becomes Airbus Helicopters

[Marignane, France] Today marks the official rebirth of Eurocopter as Airbus Helicopters. The new name has been introduced by its owner, EADS, as a step to harmonize its subsidiaries due to the rebranding of the whole consortium to Airbus Group. The forthcoming transition from Eurocopter to Airbus Helicopters was originally presented to the world on 31 July 2013.

Airbus Group says that ”Airbus Helicopters will benefit from and enrich the Airbus brand as it develops, manufactures, markets and supports a diversified and highly capable rotorcraft product line”.
“This rebranding works hand in hand with our ongoing transformation, which is now bolstered by the Airbus brand’s strong foundation in innovation, quality and industrial excellence,” said Guillaume Faury, President of Airbus Helicopters. “Both of these together will serve our ambition of setting the industry standard in terms of safety, mission capability and performance for our operators around the world.”

The naming and designations of Airbus Helicopters’ products remain at present unchanged in the new branding, while the company’s primary website has migrated to a new identity: airbushelicopters.com
